The glory days returned to Tyneside as United beat League Champions Arsenal 2-1 in the FA Cup Final. The Gunners were clear favourites and took the lead after only 12 minutes.

Undaunted, The Magpies fought back and just before half-time scored a controversial equaliser when summer signing Jack Allen scored from a Richardson cross. The question was had the ball crossed the line before United's inside forward passed it?

In the second half United took control of the game and Allen scored a brilliant second in the 72nd minute to win the day.

An estimated 250,000 people thronged the streets in dangerous and chaotic scenes when the heros returned home.

Prior to the season Jack Allen had been signed from Sheffield Wednesday as United continued to search for a new Number 9 and inside forward Harry McMenemy moved down from Scotland.

At the start of the campaign the team once again struggled to find any consistency; winning and losing in almost equal measure; the worst day being an 8-1 reverse [joint worst away defeat] at Goodison Park after trailing 6-0 at half-time [worst ever half-time deficit].

Towards Christmas they gradually improved and by New Year they were up the 3rd place and challenging for the Championship.

As they became embroiled in their ultimately successful Cup run they seemed to take their eye off the ball; especially after the semi-final victory over Chelsea. As a result they finished in a disappointing 11th place.

The fans seemed to be in a better fettle too as the average rose by over 15%.

The home game against Portsmouth in December has gone down in the record books as the only competitive game in which there was no corner kicks although there is some doubt whether this was really the case.
